DIY Craft with Colour Rice

Sensory play is very beneficial for kids as it helps cultivate the mind and allows for creative play. Coloured rice is a great example! Children can learn their colours and how to manipulate the rice into different patterns and decor during playtime.

The best part is that you can make coloured rice at home in a few simple mess free steps!

Coloured rice is perfect for sensory play as you can incorporate the fun rice into a number of crafts.

All you need is: white rice, vinegar, food colouring & food containers with lids.

Follow these simple steps to make your own coloured rice:

  1. Pour 1 cup of rice into a medium sized container or ziplock bag; add food colouring & using a toothpick, swirl the coloured gel through the rice
  1. Pour ½ tablespoon of vinegar over your rice.
  1. Close the lid on your container and shake it. Do this aggressively and remove the lid to see your vibrant, colored rice!

This entire process takes only five minutes to complete but will provide children with hours of fun!

You can use the same container for different colors, but you have to wipe it clean in between batches.

Once the dying process is complete, you need to dry your colored rice, which you can do by spreading each batch on either a plate or baking sheet.

You can place the colored rice in jars in a layering fashion to create a rainbow effect or you can create a rice box for fun!

This is a great alternative to a sandbox, and children will love the different sensations that touching rice provides.
